There are many products used to treat and prevent flea infestations. The flea only spends the adult part of it’s life on your pet, the rest of the life cycle spent in the environment (bed, carpet, boot of car etc.) The adult flea can lay 2000 eggs in one month which hatch and become blood-sucking adults themselves within 3 weeks.
If there is an existing infestation, treatment has to be directed both to the adults and also the juvenile stages in the house using an environmental spray such as Indorex. There are several animal flea products available, of which my favourite is Advocate. Advocate, not only very safe but is very effective with some environmental control and will treat many other parasites such as Fox Mange and Lungworm.
Lungworm is an emerging disease that in addition to causing a respiratory illness and cough can also cause severe problems with bleeding. The first we sometimes know about these clotting problem is at surgery when we encounter life-threatening internal bleeding.
Advocate is safe to use in puppies from 8 weeks of age and kittens from 10 weeks of age. It is then applied monthly.
Please feel free to come in to the Teddington clinic for a consultation or more specific advice on flea control for your pet. If you do not have time, some products are available for you to buy on-line. Look around our on-line shop, next day collection from the clinic is free and prices are very competitive.
