Hundreds of pounds have been raised to support homeless people and their pets during an oar-some challenge at our Surbiton branch.

We put our backs into a challenge which saw us travel a whopping 100 km on a rowing machine in aid of StreetVet.

Vet Joe Simon takes his turn in the rowing challenge.

Since its inception in 2016, StreetVet, a non-profit welfare organisation, has provided support to homeless pet owners who cannot afford veterinary treatment, while also educating them on the responsibilities and care needed in pet ownership.

As well as the sponsored row, which clients also took part in with support from several canine cheerleaders, there was also a bake sale, a raffle and a chance for owners to have their pet’s photos taken in a giant Petstagram frame.

Our clinical director Vanessa Waite is no stranger to the sport of rowing, and previously came seventh in the Welsh indoor rowing championships.

She said: “Rowing is an energetic, fun activity, so we thought this would be a perfect way to raise funds for a wonderful cause.

Clinical director Vanessa Waite demonstrated her rowing skills during the challenge.

“Some of our nurses have previously volunteered with StreetVet so we are well aware of the brilliant work they do for homeless people and their pets.

“This was the first time we’ve done a challenge of this nature and it must have been quite a surprising sight for people walking into our reception!

“We’re delighted that we reached our 100 km goal in aid of StreetVet and we really enjoyed ourselves on our fundraising journey.

“We raised a total of £650, which we are thrilled with.

“This has whetted our appetite for more unusual fundraising events so we hope to hold more in the future in aid of some great causes.”
